“Our lord Milil harbors not wrath for us, as does Helm for his folk, nor heaps law upon law that we may confuse our right hand with our left. Instead, Milil calls us to harmony, not law, a harmony that holds but three acts in contempt: blasphemy, for this is denying Milil’s song. Milil denies his song to no one. Self-slaughter, for this is putting an end to one’s own song. Milil alone can say when your song must end. And murder, for this is ending the song of another. Only Milil knows when another’s song must end.

“These three contempts were the first creations of Kakaphon, bastard brother to Milil. It is written: ‘And as our lord Milil wandered through the garden, Kakaphon opposed him, saying, “My brother, thy sweet songs have slain me: the sun and earth turn to thee as, too, the beasts and men. They call thee Song and seek thee, but call me Discord and flee my face. Thy song thus has brought me to nought” And so saying, Kakaphon of Discord felt dead.

” ‘In grief for his brother, Milil repented of his beautiful song and would not sing. The sun darkened the firmament, the earth leapt in fear, the beasts burrowed and would not rise, and the men hid their despairing eyes. Seeing these things, Milil wept and said, “My song brought this brother of mine to nought, but my silence might end the whole world It is blasphemy that I have denied my world its song; It is murder that I have slain my kin with my singing; and it is self-slaughter that I have caused in Kakaphon.”

” ‘To heal the triune wrong, Milil clove a notch from his ear in memory of Kakaphon of Discord. That notch marred the music that entered our lord’s ear, and so brought discord into Milil’s sweet hymns. By that discord, Milil then sang his song and restored the world, rectifying to himself all those who dwell in discord.’

“So even if a man should bear the guilt of blasphemy, self-slaughter, or murder, Milil will forgive, and his song wilt grow richer through the discord. Let those who seek mercy come forward now.”
